What is Backflow Testing and Why is it Necessary?

Backflow testing is a process of checking for water contamination. It is done by running water backwards through the plumbing system to see if there is any backflow. This backflow can happen when there is a change in pressure in the water lines, such as during a power outage or a broken water line.

Backflow can also happen when there is a back-siphonage of water from a contaminated source, such as a sewage line. Backflow testing is done to make sure that there is no backflow into the drinking water supply.

Backflow Testing: Steps for Compliance

Backflow testing is done by a certified backflow tester.

  • The tester will first check the backflow prevention devices to make sure they are working properly.
  • They will then test the water lines to see if there is any backflow.
  • If backflow is found, the tester will take steps to correct the problem.

Backflow testing is a required test for many businesses, such as restaurants, convenience stores, and food processors. It is also required for some irrigation systems.
